Hogwarts: School of Magnificents

Post  The Bubbling Dark on Tue Jun 01, 2010 3:43 pm

I've been receiving request for a Harry Potter Campaign and I spent a small part of this weekend entertaining the possibilities. So far I'm going with the DQ(Dairy Queen) system with Houses playing a role in potency and type of spells known. Any ideas are welcomed.

Characteristics to consider:

Birth: Muggle, Full Blood
House: Griffindore, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slitherin
Field of Study: Potions, Defense Against the Dark Arts, Divinations, Transmutation(McGonigle's Class?), etc

Race: Human, Viela, Half Giant, Werewolf, Goblin(Yes, Goblins!)

Now If you are a Muggle..what next? All of your options were non Muggle options. What can I be a professor trying to prove this exists, or a hunter of magie, and he cant tell the difference between magic..just thinks its all bad??

Due, in part, to the portrayal of Hermione Granger's parents I believe it is possible to be a Muggle and still have a part in the Wizarding World or at least be aware of its existance and practices. Could a Muggle be a Witch Hunter? Of Course. Could a professor in Muggle Technologies be a completely talentless nonWizard? Yes. I think this aspect was mostly skirted in The Harry Potter Series because Harry and the gang were all Wizards but the possibilty was there.

As the idea has been spimmimg around in my head I've taken head what Leetin said to me yesterday and decided that the game would center around 'Thomson's Institute of Magic Theory', an american Wizarding school that is less know than the more prestigeous Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, or of course Hogwarts. It will allow the game to be ours while still sticking to the Lexicon of J.K. Rowling's world.

What would be a few of the classes taught in this public magic school?

Let me clear my throat for this... Cause you know I have plenty to say!

First on characteristics...

Expansion on Birth:
* Muggle (non magic)
* Muggle born (magic from two muggle parents)
* Half-blood (one muggle parent and one wizard parent)
* Full-blood (two wizard parents)
* Squib (two wizard parents, but child has no magical ability

Houses: As you are going to center the school in America, the houses of Griffindore, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin would not fit, as they were specific to persons of the same last names who founded Hogwarts. We would have to come up with a back story of the school, names of houses, and what the names represent.

Fields of Study: I could spend some time and go into great detail about this... I can explain each class and how it relates in a role playing environment. Let me know.

Race: You covered a lot, but considering we are centering it in America, we could expand to other races as well. This also goes with creatures. Perhaps we wouldnt have grindylows in the US. What other creatures would we have?

Although it is hard for me to support this website, because of his lawsuite with the great JK Rowling herself.... hp-lexicon.org is an AMAZING website full of great Harry Potter info. It would serve as a wonderful jumping point for such a game.

I can hardly hold in my excitement. I don't know how much fun we can have playing, but just the thought of creating the game makes me want to jump up and down.

I AM SUCH A HARRY POTTER GEEK!!!!!!!

In addition.... The class is Transfiguration.

Also, where would the school be located? Country? Mountains? City? Would it be completely public? No tuition needed? Is anyone welcome? In Harry Potter, races that are not human are looked down upon and "regulated" by laws. Would we do the same?

WOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Yea..I'm going to back away now, Harry Potter isn't my specialty. But as a PC I know it would suck not being able to use magic. I know you like to make the party diverse but from recent campaigns, I don't think thats a good idea.

So everyone should be the same generic class and type? I really don't see how that would be fun...

Thompson's Institute of Magic Theory will be broken up into three schools:

Defense and Securities-
  • Charms
    Potions
    Wards

Forms and Alterations-
  • Transfiguartion
Potions(not sure what to put here)
    Enchantments

Natural Studies-
  • Divination
    Care of Magical Cratures
    Herbology

Additions to the previous list:

Defense and Securities majors will specialize in: Charms, Curses, Wards, and Defense Against the Dark Arts

Forms and Alterations students will focus on: Transfiguration, Potions, Ancient Runes, and Arithmancy.

Natural Studies alumni would have mastered: Divination, Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, Muggle Studies and History of Magic.

Most courses are taught universally but major classes are taken at various levels of intensity. This Translates into more skills and spells in a player's field of study but allows that the scholarly Natuarl Studies student can still cast wards and brew potions just not at the same level as those that have majored in them.

Personally I feel that a game such as this would be a lot of fun especially for those who have read or watched Harry Potter and to the poor souls who haven't done either I say you should at least give it a try before you nay say it. By the way Gromwald you spelled 'natural' wrong that's not like you.

Also I feel these spells should be included in the game.
1.Levicorpus
2.Libiracorpus
3.Sectum Sempra
4.Engorgio
5.Reducio
6.Augmenti
7.Relashio
8.Reducto
9.Muffliato
10.Incendio

2> Snnooglycrap - You poop your pants involinarily
3> Sheeplylover - Yes, your in love.

All joking aside...HUH?
